Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra could miss Qi2 wireless charging feature, documents reveal

Samsung’s Galaxy S flagship series has always been the benchmark for smartphones in the market, offering innovative features and designs year after year. However, According to a Finnish mobile carrier SuomiMobilii, the long-awaited Galaxy S25 Ultra, part of Samsung’s 2025 offerings, is going to fall short of expectations in one significant area: full compatibility with the Qi2 wireless charging standard.

Storage and memory options for the Galaxy S25 series

Finnish carrier SuomiMobilii has given some early glimpses into the memory and storage configurations for the Galaxy S25 series. The carrier indicates that the storage options for each model in the lineup will be as follows:

    • Galaxy S25: 128 GB or 256 GB
    • Galaxy S25+: 256 GB or 512 GB
    • Galaxy S25 Ultra: 256 GB, 512 GB, or 1 TB

These several kinds of configurations offer advantages to wide ranges of users, casual smartphone owners to power users requiring amorphous storage for photos, videos, and apps.

A peek into Galaxy S25 accessories

The carrier has also added a list of cases that will be available for the Galaxy S25 series, including:

    • Standing Grip Case
    • Silicone Case
    • Rugged Case
    • Kindsuit Case
    • Magnet Case

In particular, the Magnet Case makes one raise an eyebrow. This accessory shows a major omission in the Galaxy S25 hardware design, which might indicate the lack of built-in magnets required for full Qi2 wireless charging compatibility.

    What is Qi2 wireless charging?

The Qi2 wireless charging standard, an innovation that has been borrowed from the Apple MagSafe technology, has introduced a new convenience and reliability to wireless charging. The device has to include magnets which align perfectly with the wireless charger to ensure optimal connectivity.

Samsung is embracing some requirements set out by Qi2, including the minimum charging rate of 15W already featured in the Galaxy S24 series, but the Galaxy S25 range may not have a base design featuring magnets. Rather, the magnetic case may provide a sort of compromise for these devices to interface with a more diverse group of Qi2-compatible accessories.

A missed opportunity for the Galaxy S25 series

If this information becomes true, the Galaxy S25 series might have lost its opportunity with Samsung to present full Qi2 interoperability in its flagships and allow other competing brands to create a seamless wireless charging experience through either Apple’s MagSafe-like offering or otherwise.

However, this limitation does not rule out the Galaxy S25 from other key benefits of the Qi2 standard. The devices are expected to maintain high efficiency and fast charging speeds.

    Launch date and expectations

Samsung is likely to launch the Galaxy S25 series at the Galaxy Unpacked in San Francisco on January 22nd, 2025. As usual, the Galaxy S25 Ultra will be the highlight — premium hardware, gorgeous designs, and cutting-edge features set to be on the table here. Unfortunately, the wireless charging may not fully be there, but much else should be enhanced compared to the previous generation — improvements in camera technology, performance, as well as battery life.

The Galaxy S25 Ultra may seem to lack the full Qi2 wireless charging feature that some fans were hoping for. It might disappoint those fans who expect seamless integration with the latest charging accessories. However, Samsung’s flagship series has always delivered industry-leading innovations, and the Galaxy S25 will probably be no exception. The Galaxy Unpacked event will show if Samsung’s design choices will resonate with its audience and if they compare well with other competitors.
