Apple iPhone 17 Series CAD renders leak, revealing major design differences across models

Apple has just recently released the iPhone 16e, but the company is already working on the iPhone 17 series. A fresh leak has emerged, purportedly displaying CAD-based renders of the future iPhone 17 series models, giving speculation regarding possible design updates.

Leaked iPhone 17 series renders appear online

X (formerly Twitter) leaker Majin Bu posted an image earlier that supposedly features the iPhone 17 series with four different models. From left to right, the image is said to contain the iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Although Apple yet to confirm those details, the leak gives a first glimpse into what may turn out to be the next models of its premium smartphones.

A two-tone design for the Pro models?

Perhaps the most noticeable aspect of the renders is the two-tone back color on the Pro and Pro Max variants. The renders suggest that a card-sized area near the top of the rear panel may feature a different material than the rest of the back cover. This design style has previously appeared in devices like the OPPO Find X6 Pro, Find X7 Ultra, and Google’s Pixel 2, which featured a metal back with a glass panel.

Nevertheless, it remains uncertain whether Apple will use the same material mix or if the aesthetic difference serves another purpose. The company has not stated anything officially about these design options.

Differing camera bumps across models

The leaked renders also indicate significant differences in camera module layouts between the iPhone 17 series. The iPhone 17 Air seems to have a single camera on the rear side placed inside a horizontally positioned bump, which is similar to the Nexus 6P in 2015. In contrast, the vanilla iPhone 17 maintains a vertically stacked dual-camera arrangement, following the design that has been adopted in the iPhone 16 lineup.

Conversely, the Pro and Pro Max models appear to maintain a more traditional camera housing design, following Apple’s pattern of outfitting its premium devices with a more sophisticated camera system.

Should you trust this leak?

Although these leaks paint an interesting picture of Apple’s possible design pathway, one has to be cynical about them. Majin Bu, the guy behind this leak, has some mixed history about him when it comes to leaks regarding Apple. Also, since the iPhone 17 series is still far from release, Apple may alter some design aspects before the official announcement.
