In a major move to spread internet connectivity throughout India, Bharti Airtel has announced a partnership with SpaceX to bring the Starlink satellite internet high-speed services to its customers. The alliance aims to close the digital access gap by providing steady broadband connectivity, especially in remote and underserved areas of the country.
Expanding connectivity to rural and remote areas
Under this pact, Airtel and SpaceX will collaborate to bring Starlink’s low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite technology to extend connectivity in locations that have restricted access to traditional broadband infrastructure. The alliance will extend high-speed internet to far-flung villages, schools, hospitals, and businesses in rural India.
Gopal Vittal, Bharti Airtel’s Managing Director and Vice Chairman, highlighted the significance of this partnership:
“This partnership strengthens our commitment to bridging India’s digital divide. By leveraging Starlink’s advanced satellite technology, we aim to provide seamless internet access to communities that have long been left behind.”
Integration with Airtel’s services
In addition to providing Starlink’s satellite broadband, the deal has provisions for embedding the service within Airtel’s current telecom infrastructure. This involves offering satellite internet solutions for enterprise customers, businesses, and government organizations that seek to boost connectivity in remote areas. Furthermore, Airtel’s wide distribution network in India will offer Starlink kits and services.
Gwynne Shotwell, President and Chief Operating Officer at SpaceX, had interest in the endeavor:
“We are excited to partner with Airtel to bring the benefits of Starlink’s high-speed, low-latency internet to more people in India. Our technology is designed to connect even the most isolated regions, and this agreement is a step toward achieving that goal.”
Regulatory approvals and deployment plans
The launch of Starlink services in India is subject to obtaining regulatory clearances. Airtel and SpaceX are both in active discussions with the Indian government. In addition, concerned authorities will comply with local telecommunication regulations.
After obtaining approvals, the rollout will proceed in phases, prioritizing areas without connectivity. The collaboration is consistent with India’s overall digital evolution strategy, with support for efforts like Digital India and BharatNet.
