Apple’s alleged M4 MacBook Pro unboxing video surfaces, revealing potential upgrades

A video supposedly showing an unannounced 14-inch MacBook Pro featuring Apple’s M4 chip has leaked online, and the authenticity remains unknown. However, it is prompting some interest in the form of information regarding a next MacBook Pro. The video that started it all was uploaded by a Russian YouTube channel Wylsacom. Later on, it was shared on X (formerly Twitter), by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

    Key details from the leak

The packaging seen in the video seems to be a 14-inch MacBook Pro, and the specifications talked about are consistent with previous rumors. On September 25th, the leaker ShrimpApplePro claimed that an identical unit of the same MacBook Pro was being sold in a private Facebook group. The box seen in the video above, allegedly leaking these features, shows several potential upgrades for the base model.

Here’s what the product packaging hints at regarding Apple’s upcoming laptop:

    1. M4 Chip: 25% faster performance

The retail box is bold enough to say that it features an M4 chip housing a 10-core CPU. Thus, it distinguishes the chip from the 8-core processor found on the latest M3 one. As indicated by the YouTube channel, a Geekbench 6 benchmark result may imply that an M4 chip will be capable of rendering 25% more than the same M3 chip. That’s in line with what Apple mentioned earlier, commenting on the M4 chip when it first arrived at the iPad Pro in the early months of this year.

    2. 16 GB of RAM as standard

The leak of the packaging also indicates that the 14-inch MacBook Pro will come with 16 GB of standard RAM. That may well fit within some early rumors stating that the next Macs will begin with higher memory configurations. Anyway, we don’t know if that is standard or built-to-order.

    3. Three Thunderbolt 4 ports

The laptop apparently incorporates three Thunderbolt 4 ports, adding an extra pair over the two Thunderbolt 3 ports of the base model. These ports would be useful for users needing more flexibility, such as connecting multiple external devices or displays.

    4. Space Black color option

Some of the most interesting design changes hinted at by this leak are the addition of Space Black as a color option for the base model. For now, Apple offers that color option only on higher-end configurations like the M3 Pro or M3 Max models. Availability on the standard model may indicate a far-reaching design upgrade.

    Expected announcement and release date

Mark Gurman has already suggested that Apple’s new lineup of M4-powered Macs will be released in late October, where some versions may arrive on November 1. Still, the leaked video does not confirm the final design, and spec-enthusiasts will look forward to the official announcement.
