Samsung Electronics announced the mass production of the world’s first 24Gbyte (Gb) GDDR7 DRAM, another step forward in the graphic DRAM steps. The new memory solution stands out due to its high capacity and increased speed. Positioned for a wide range of next-generation applications, this new memory solution underscores the critical role graphics DRAM will play in revolutionizing next-gen graphics capabilities.
Expanding memory applications
The 24Gb GDDR7 DRAM shall expand the usage of graphics memory beyond its traditional applications in graphics cards and gaming consoles. High-performance performance of this DRAM will be able to make a difference in companies, which are working in fields such as data centers and AI workstations, and today that is symptomatic for an extremely high demand for advanced solutions for memory.
Technological advancements
YongCheol Bae, Executive Vice President of Memory Product Planning, Samsung Electronics shared on this new development, “The company has for years led innovation in the graphics DRAM market. The GDDR7 leverages 5th-generation 10 nm-class technology that doubled cell density inside an equivalent package size to the prior generation. Technological advancements are responsible for the better performance and higher capacity.”
Performance specifications
Some key features of GDDR7 include a speed up to 40 Gbps, representing an increase by 25 percent compared to the previous generation. In addition, the memory implements three-level Pulse-Amplitude Modulation (PAM3) signaling to achieve such speeds, which can scale up to 42.5 Gbps under certain usage conditions.
In the dimension of power efficiency, Samsung uses technologies first from mobile products to GDDR7. There are methods like clock control management and dual VDD design that have been applied to suppress unnecessary power consumption. Thus, it has been elevated over 30% in power efficiency.

Reliability during high-speed operations
To achieve low currents, this 24Gb GDDR7 design makes use of many power gating techniques. Such a minimization is crucial at such high speeds because of its need in next-generation AI computing systems to maintain the operations stable.
Future plans: Validation and commercialization
Samsung will begin validation of the 24Gb GDDR7 with its biggest GPU customers in AI computing systems this year and plans to bring the commercialization of it into early next year. Eventually, this development might change the future use cases in varied other areas that require cutting-edge memory technologies.
