Following the implementation of the Digital Markets Act within the European Union, Apple has lost partial control over the apps downloaded onto iOS devices within that region. Thanks to relaxed rules from the company, The Verge reports that the iPhone owners in the EU can now easily install torrenting apps without having to jailbreak their devices. AltStore PAL, an alternative marketplace, is at the forefront with a myriad of different apps, all of which Apple has traditionally disallowed on the App Store.
Torrenting apps arrive at the AltStore PAL
AltStore PAL has introduced new apps that just couldn’t make it into the official App Store. Amongst them are:
- iTorrent: An iOS torrent client that allows users to download and manage torrent files directly on their iPhones.
- qBitControl: A remote client for managing qBittorrent on desktop systems.
- PeopleDrop: A social discovery app focused on dating, offering a new way for users to meet and connect.
- UTM SE: An app that enables the emulation of various operating systems such as Windows, Linux, and macOS on iOS devices.
Interestingly, the UTM SE also passed Apple’s review and is now up on the App Store, which it wouldn’t have if not for previous rejection. The AltStore team played an important role in this approval.
Impact of the Digital Markets Act
The DMA has dramatically changed the scene regarding the distribution of iOS apps in the EU. Apple has had an official policy banning torrent apps due to third-party rights infringement. With the enforcement of the DMA, it’s taken much of the company’s power to enforce such policies, making it easy for other marketplaces like AltStore PAL to exist.
How to access AltStore PAL
AltStore PAL requires a person to have an iPhone that runs iOS 17.4 or higher. For Apple’s fees, this comes at the price of a €1.50/year subscription. More information regarding the apps and other subscription details may be found on the AltStore website.
