Amazon India introduces 6-layer strategy to strengthen security amid rising e-commerce fraud

As India’s digital economy continues to thrive, there is an unfortunate undercurrent, the increasing cases of fraud and misconduct on e-commerce platforms. As millions of Indian consumers flock to the convenience of online shopping, a small but pervasive group of fraudsters is creating new challenges in the ecosystem.

A recent PwC India report highlights that platform-based activities, such as e-commerce, account for 57% of fraud cases in the online world. Here, Amazon India has been a key player in building trust and safety, using an array of security features and AI-based tools to safeguard consumers and sellers alike.

Growing digital adoption, rising security threats

India’s e-commerce industry has experienced a rapid spike in adoption but at the expense of increased deceitful behavior:

    • Seller Malpractices: Sellers on marketplaces like Amazon.in have been found engaging in malicious activities, such as delivering counterfeit or damaged products, which erode consumer confidence.
    • Supply Chain Manipulations: Little fulfillment network affiliates have allegedly substituted authentic products with counterfeit products or manipulated delivery status, deterring customer satisfaction.
    • Customer Abuse of Policies: A minority of customers have abused customer-friendly return and refund policies inappropriately, again stressing seller relationships and marketplace equity.

    Amazon’s multi-layered security response

In response to these emerging threats, Amazon India has undertaken a variety of measures designed to strengthen security, protect customers, and assist sellers:

    • One-Time Password (OTP) Verification: OTP is requested during delivery for premium items to ensure that the package is delivered securely to the intended party.
    • Advanced Seller Verification: Amazon implements tough onboarding processes and regular verifications to prevent fraudulent sellers from joining the platform.
    • Tamper-Evident Packaging: Amazon seals packages with uniquely identifiable, tamper-evident bags. Amazon requests customers to refuse any visibly tampered packages.
    • Open Box Delivery: For certain items, customers can examine the product in the company of the delivery partner prior to acceptance, thus verifying product quality and authenticity.
    • AI-Powered Monitoring: Machine learning algorithms at Amazon monitor for abnormal patterns and actively detect and prevent suspicious behavior on the platform.
    • 24/7 Customer Support: There is a support team that works continuously to resolve any issues that the customers or sellers might encounter.

“As a customer-centric company, we’re committed to fostering a safe and trusted shopping experience,” said Akshay Sahi, Director & Head of Amazon Prime, Speed & Fulfillment Experience, India. “We encourage our customers to actively participate in safeguarding their online shopping by remaining vigilant and adhering to recommended security practices.”

What customers can do to stay safe

While Amazon keeps investing in platform security, consumers also have a role to play in ensuring a safe e-commerce environment. Here are some best practices:

    • Verify OTPs Personally: Share OTPs only in person with delivery personnel. Never share them over calls or messages.
    • Inspect Deliveries: Inspect for tampering and confirm contents during open box deliveries. Refuse suspicious packages on the spot.
    • Follow Proper Return Procedures: While requesting a return, take care that everything from accessories, guides, and tags is complete and well packaged.
    • Beware of Impersonators: Speak only on genuine Amazon platforms. Ensure that the authenticity of the emails can be verified with an Amazon smile logo.
    • Report Issues Promptly: Immediately inform customer care with all information in detail to facilitate prompt action.

A collective effort to combat e-commerce fraud

As India’s digital commerce ecosystem grows bigger, so does the responsibility of all stakeholders—platforms, sellers, and customers—to safeguard its integrity.

Amazon’s efforts toward creating a secure and open environment are not only pre-emptive but also inclusive. Amazon also assists sellers directly through programs like Safe-T claims, efficiently resolving disputes related to deliveries or payments.

The fight against e-commerce fraud is far from over. With everyone’s watchfulness and constant innovation, India’s online marketplace can stay a safe, secure, and booming destination for everyone.
