Samsung isn’t new to pushing the boundaries of smartphone design, and its next big thing, the triple-screen foldable, proves it. Internally known as the Galaxy G Fold, the company has confirmed that this ambitious device is fully developed and ready to roll. But here’s the catch: Samsung isn’t sure if now is the right time to release it.
Speaking to Android Authority, a Samsung executive revealed that the device has been “designed and everything.” In fact, it’s been around internally for quite a while. So why the delay?
“What we’re debating is the viability,” the executive said. “Is there really a demand for this form factor?”
Ready for production, but on pause
The device isn’t a prototype. It’s ready to go into mass production. But Samsung, always careful not to flood the market with a product before its time, is holding back to make sure consumers actually want something this different, and expensive.
“We have it, we are ready for it, we can put it into production,” the company rep added. “But to what purpose? That’s what we’re deeply investigating at the moment.”
This cautious approach isn’t surprising. Foldables, while growing in popularity, are still far from mainstream. And a triple-screen foldable with a likely premium price tag is an even tougher sell.
A soft launch might happen later this year
Despite the uncertainty, there are signs that Samsung may test the waters soon. According to The Elec, a respected Korean outlet, Samsung is planning a limited launch of the Galaxy G Fold in late 2025, specifically in South Korea and China.
Production is expected to start as early as September, giving the company time to assess consumer reactions in select markets before deciding on a global rollout. It’s a smart move that gives Samsung room to adjust based on real-world feedback.
Here’s what we know about the Galaxy G Fold so far
Samsung hasn’t released official specs, but leaks and insider reports paint an exciting picture of the hardware:
- Display: A massive 10-inch OLED panel that folds in three parts
- Processor: Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 (Elite)
- Main Camera: 200MP primary sensor
- Additional Cameras: 10MP 3x telephoto, 12MP ultra-wide, and a 10MP front camera
- Software: Likely One UI 8, built on Android
- Expected Price: Roughly $2,922 USD
Design-wise, the Galaxy G Fold is shaping up to be quite different from other foldables like Huawei’s Mate X series. A leak tied to One UI 8 gave us a first look, revealing a unique Z-shaped folding mechanism that expands the screen significantly.
Demand will decide its future
Samsung’s hesitation isn’t about the tech, it’s about timing. As successful as the Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip have been, their adoption is still relatively niche compared to standard smartphones. Adding a third screen and a price tag near $3,000 only raises the stakes.
For now, Samsung seems content with watching and listening. If the demand is there, the Galaxy G Fold could make its full debut in 2026 or sooner. If not, the company may refine it further or even keep it on the shelf a little longer.
